What is the Apple Mighty Mouse?

Apple Inc. is an American company that manufactures several electronic gadgets. One of the products that Apple Inc. manufactures is computer and computer accessories. Computer accessories and the computers created by Apple Inc. are designed in a distinct way. They are marked by the Apple logo and usually made of white plastic. There are lots of computer related items created by Apple and one of these products is called the Apple Mighty Mouse.

This mouse is the first ever multi-button mouse manufactured by Apple Inc. Last August 2, 2005, Apple Inc. announced and sold this mouse for the first time. Before Apple Inc. announced and sold this Apple Mighty Mouse, Apple Inc. sold single-button mice for their computers.

This mouse is made from white plastic and like other Apple Inc. products; the Apple logo is clearly displayed on its surface. The shape is almost similar to the Apple Pro Mouse but the difference is that the Mighty Mouse does not have the transparent surface that the Pro Mouse has.

There are four functional buttons in the Mighty Mouse namely left button, right button, scroll ball and side squeeze buttons. The left button is at the top surface regardless of contact points. The right button is at the top surface and should be at the right side of the surface only. Scroll ball may scroll in any direction and act as a button when both the ball and button are pressed. The side squeeze buttons on the other hand acts as a single button. There may be separate buttons on both sides but there is no difference when the user clicks either on the right or left side button.

Nowadays, this mouse is also available in USB-linked and Bluetooth-wireless versions. The Bluetooth version uses Bluetooth 2.0 in order to communicate and uses laser technology. Laser technology was chosen instead of optical technology to have better accuracy. Two AA batteries are used to run this mouse but a single AA battery will do for people who wanted to lessen the weight of the mouse.

Apple Mighty Mouse may seem as a very stylish and handy mouse but still, there have been a lot of criticisms about this product during the initial release. Several criticisms raised by users are regarding the squeeze buttons not giving tactile feedback, several users’ even states that it is a bit difficult to reach. Other users complain about the prices of the Mighty Mouse as well. They state that competitors of Apple Inc. that sells the same product like the wireless mouse, costs a lot cheaper than the wireless Mighty Mouse. But above all these concerns, the most common complaint of the users is the dirt builds up in the scroll ball portion.

Because of the criticisms raised by the customers, it seems that Apple Inc. did something to address these concerns. Although they did not create a public announcement about upgrading the quality or addressing the initial concerns about Mighty Mouse, users testifies that as of February 2006, Mighty Mouse runs more smoothly compared before. Aside from that, the scroll ball remains cleaner compared to how it did before.
