How Do I Bypass BIOS Password?

The BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) Password is supposed to add an extra layer of security for computers by preventing a person from gaining access to the computers’ most sensitive areas. Some manufacturers completely lock out customers from BIOS area. This is done to prevent the customer from changing the settings because the process might end up damaging the hardware which may be covered by a warranty. However, a computer specialist may want to make some hardware changes to the computer. In this case, he will need to have the BIOS password. Sometimes we forget the password, or we buy a computer from someone who also forgot to provide the BIOS password. Before attempting any of the methods suggested below, it is recommended that you contact the manufacturer and inquire about the best ways of by passing the BIOS security in that system. Treat the suggested methods as a last resort. You should also be aware that trying some of the methods below may have unfavorable implications on any warranty that you might have with your hardware manufacturer.

Remove the CMOS Battery

This is the simplest method of bypassing BIOS password. The CMOS battery is responsible for, among other things, powering the date and time settings even when the computer is turned off. If this battery is removed for about 10 minutes, the computer will forget the date and time settings as well as the BIOS password. However, you should avoid performing this on laptops if you are unfamiliar with working on laptop hardware. Maximum care should be taken when attempting this method, because the method may also clear BIOS customizations, and this can make PC components inoperable.

First, unplug the power cables to your PC and open your computer case with a screwdriver. The CMOS battery is flat, silver and metallic. Once removed, wait at least 10-25 minutes before putting it back. This will allow the power that is being kept in the capacitors to be discharged. If all went well, there should not be any more passwords.

Bypass BIOS using Software

There is software called !BIOS that is designed to decrypt several password programs including Award, Phoenix, American Megatrends, IMB and others. It can also brute force the password, though this method may not always bring the desired results. To start, reboot your computer and keep in mind the kind of BIOS you are running. Then proceed to download !BIOS from the Internet and save it on the desktop. Open a DOS command by going to “Start” then “Run’ and type “cmd” on the “Run” textbox.

Type “cd desktop” on the dark window that will open. Then, something similar to this might appear. “C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Desktop>”. Type in the !BIOS file that you downloaded. Using the down arrow, select “Crackers”, and press the right arrow. Using the up/down arrows, choose the BIOS make that your motherboard is using, and then press “Enter”. A menu will appear asking you what you want to crack. Press 1 on the keyboard and this step will give you the BIOS password. Reboot the computer and try using the newly- found password.

Use Manufacturer Backdoor Passwords

Some manufacturers have devised some passwords mainly for their own technicians, but some of them have since been in the public domain. The ones that are available can be found online on sites such as (http://www.technibble.com ). They should be keyed in as they are as they are case sensitive.
