Black and White Digital Photography

Digital cameras use a device called image sensor to capture images. There are two types of image sensors. They are charge-coupled device (CCD) and CMOS sensors. These are nothing but silicon chips that have millions of photosensitive diodes. More the brightness you use, better the clarity of the image. Once you are over with capturing the image, they are stored as digital numbers. The images are then reconstructed by the series of digits in which they are stored.

When you try to take an image, it’s the brightness that is been captured by these image sensors. The images are recorded between white and black and not in any other colors. Based on the three major primary colors “red, blue and green,” you get a color photograph. Brightness of the three colors namely, red, blue and green are recorded or captured separately by the image sensor. How a camera captures the color of the image is by using a technique called interpolation. First, the digital camera calculates the color that is being captured and then combines it with the color that is being captured by the color filter. Depending upon the image, its size and format, you get the final colored image.

In order to get a full colored image, image sensors interpolate the actual color of each and every pixel by looking at the brightness of the colors recorded. Each and every time you take a digital photograph, these calculations or interpolations are made within a few seconds. The quality of the image largely depends on the performance of the image sensor.

You can first start taking pictures by shooting inside your home or some places where you visit regularly. You can take anything right from plants, floor, ceiling, door mats, sofas, kitchen utilities, etc. If you are a beginner to digital photography and techniques, it is always better to take photographs where access to the system is easy. This is because as soon as you have taken all the snaps, you can upload them to the system and can analyze how the picture has come out. This will make you take better pictures.

It is also possible to convert a colored digital image to a black and white digital image. You will first have to plan where you are going to shoot your image. Once this step is over, ensure that there is proper lighting. If not, you may not get a proper image. You can also use the flash that is available in the digital camera for proper lighting. You are now ready to capture the image. Now, upload these photographs to your system. You can use Photoshop or any other image editing software to convert the colored image to black and white.

We currently have digital cameras, which has an in-built photo editing program. You may also convert the colored images to black and white, remove blurs caused by camera shakes, removing red-eyes, etc.
