The Difference between Spyware and Viruses

Spyware and viruses both create havoc in every computer system. Not only does it lessen your PC’s performance but it could also irritate you with those nonstop pop-ups and ads showing in your screen. At one glance, both give inconvenience to computer users and may seem similar in functions and description. However, spyware and viruses are two different things, each having a special purpose for their existence. First, what is a spyware and what is a computer virus ?

According to Wikipedia, a spyware is a computer software that is installed surreptitiously on a personal computer to intercept or take partial control over the user’s interaction with the computer without the user’s informed consent. Spyware programs can collect those different kinds of personal information. They can also intercept the user’s control over their computers by installation of additional software, redirection of your web browser activity, or diversion of the advertising revenue to a third party.

Meanwhile, viruses are computer programs that duplicate themselves and infect another computer . Frequently, spywares enter into your computer system as accompanying a downloaded item that you want to retrieve. These usually come from freeware sites. They are actually very tricky as they hide and run within the background of your PC without you knowing it. It can keep track of your keystrokes as well as take note of your activities. There are even some spywares that can examine the documents that you save on your PC.

Unlike the spyware, viruses need to be performed in order for them to function. They are actually codes or systems that are placed into the program that once clicked and be opened will create pandemonium in your computer system. These are very dangerous programs that can tear down the system and wipe out all your programs and files and break in to your address books.
A word of caution: do not attempt to open e-mails or files originating from people you do not know or download their attachments. Use antispyware and antivirus software from reliable program manufacturers, keep your firewall on, scan your files regularly, and don’t forget to run your software protection.
