Digital Photography for Dummies

Posted on 18 July 2010

It is digital photography era and therefore, essential to know the different terms related to digital photography and how to manage the photographs taken. This will help those who really do not know anything about digital photography, that is, digital photography for dummies. Let us first discuss about the terms that are often used in digital photography.

First we shall discuss about the aperture and aperture-priority. Aperture is nothing but the space that the lens provide for the light to get inside. It is also known as f-stop. If the f-stop number is small, it means larger aperture and large means smaller aperture. Digital camera automatically chooses the best shutter speed when an aperture is selected. When a smaller aperture is chosen, depth of the field is greater. Depth of the field is the distance in which objects are in focus.

It is also essential to control the exposure. There are various ways or modes to control exposure. Aperture-priority is one way of controlling exposure. You can also control the light by using two ways. They are Incident light meter and Spot meter. Incident light meter is also called as center-weighted meter as the focus or the exposure meter is pointed towards the center of the photograph. Here, you set the ISO, which is same as that of the ISO in the camera. Spot meter is an exposure meter where the light is pointed towards a specific point. They look like a miniature telescope.

There are different types of modes available in the digital camera. One such mode is manual mode. You can switch to manual mode when you are sure that it is not necessary for the digital camera to reset the exposure all by itself. Similarly, when you want to have control over the shutter speed, you can use manual mode.

Next is the shutter speed. It is the amount of time the shutter blades stay open in order for the light to get inside the camera. If the shutter is kept opened for a longer period, more light enters the digital camera and if less or shorter time, then less light enters the digital camera. Shutter priority should be chosen when you either want to cancel any action or when you wish to cancel the camera motion.

A charged-coupled device (CCD) is an image sensor. It contains millions of pixels to record light when the shutter button of the digital camera is pressed.

Let us now look at managing the photographs that have been taken. When you take photographs using a digital camera, they are generally numbered in sequence starting from 1, for example, IMG_001, IMG_002 and so on. In most of the digital cameras, every time you change the media card, the number sequence starts from 1 again. Therefore, it becomes essential that you manually change the numbers after you transfer the photographs to the system. Another way is to use Microsoft Windows Picture Editor to sort out this problem. There are various other software’s available in the market to solve this problem. You can use any of them after going through the reviews for those products.
