Let us discuss about the essentials of a good digital camera and accessories that are required. The two important features that a digital camera should require are image stabilization and water proof.

Image stabilization helps to steady the image projected back to the camera and also helps in capturing anti-shake pictures. Certain digital cameras come with anti-shake instead of image stabilization.

Ensure that you have enough memory cards with you because if the memory card in your digital camera fails, you can still capture images using the spare card that you have.

Similarly, you should ensure that the batteries are in good condition. It is always advisable to use rechargeable batteries instead of disposable or use-n-throw batteries as disposable batteries are expensive. Rechargeable batteries can be Nickel Meta Hydride (NiMH), Nickel Cadmium (Nicd) or Lithium-ion (Li-ion). Lithium-ion batteries are in general expensive than Nickel Meta Hydride batteries. Ensure that the batteries are charged fully before you start to capture images. Charge in the batteries gradually decreases even if you have not used your digital camera. Charging the batteries may take up to five hours, which depends upon the type of rechargeable battery you use.

You would also require flash. It is not possible to take photographs when there is light always. Therefore, it is essential that you have flash in your digital camera. You can capture photographs even when the light is dull, bad or no light, if you have flash.

Tripod is another essential accessory that you might require. You would have to practice a lot to take pictures that are not blurred. Blur happens when there is a shake. In order to avoid this, tripod is essential. However, it is up to your discretion.

Finally, you require a media to store the images that you have captured. You can use any of the storage media like hard disks, CDs, DVDs to store the captured images. Hard disks are called magnetic storage devices as the images are stored in terms of zeros and ones, which are called binary digits or bits. You can also store the digital photographs on your system. However, it might occupy more space. You can burn the images in a CD or a DVD, which is much easier to carry than the hard disk. It is easy to burn using the burning software’s that are available in the market like Easy CD Creator, Nero. Easy instructions are available on how to burn images with the burning software kit. When burning images in a CD, it is advisable to choose “multi-session” as you can add digital photographs whenever you want. Normal capacity of a CD is 700MB. If you do not choose “multi-session,” you can use that particular CD only once to store images. It is always advisable not to use any other applications when burning as it might lead to burning errors.

It is always advisable to store one copy in the hard disk and one in removable media like CD or DVD. This is because you can retrieve the copies even if one is damaged. It is also advisable not to store images in the root directory of the hard disk.
