Wouldn’t it be great to access the internet from anywhere at any time, all over the world with satellite internet from DirecTV? You’d imagine this would be a sweet and amazing deal that no one in their right mind would pass up, internet direct from the satellite infrastructure floating along in the sky without anything to mess with your signals and hardly a down moment – super speed internet beamed from space to your house. Unfortunately there are two problems with this. First: DirecTV does not provide internet access at this time, secondly, DirecTV would have to upgrade every single dish that they have to accommodate such an upgrade, with additional transmission and receiving technologies. As of October 2004 the plan was to use three of its new satellites to provide broadband internet to every house that could receive it – however this was scrapped and completely abandoned. Instead the new satellites are used for HD-TV technologies and used for broadband in that field of profitable clear picture delivery.
Instead DirecTV is signing deals with local DSL provider for deals that make the internet cheaper in the locations that have willing ISPs. This way customers of DirecTV can get internet at a deal price, and is an incentive to get people to use DirecTV. Beware any agreements you sign with them, for many of them contain a fine print that states you are leasing equipment from them and that it is a multi-year binding contract, that if you cancel you will have to pay a penalty fee for using their equipment and canning them early. This is not Mister Rogers Neighborhood, the parent company of DirecTV is the DirecTV group, who is in turned owned by Liberty Media which is owned by John Malone (nicknamed the Darth Vader of Cable) and that has stock owned by News Corp, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch.
