PortableApps has been an absolute lifesaver for me – I can go to college and have all the programs I need to continue development on my websites without needing to install a single program on any machine at the college (which is prohibited anyways)! When I sit down all I have to do is plug it in, and before me are my files, and the launch pad with all of the programs I love. FileZilla (a very good FTP Client), the ENTIRE Open Office suite (comes bundled with one of the packages to download – or can be individually installed), Mozilla FireFox, Miranda IM (AIM, MSN, Etc…), and much, much, more!
So far it has helped me stay productive despite the severe limitations imposed by my college’s internet policies. Although normally I would use my laptop – I can’t inside a classroom. This makes it possible to do so with all of my setting saved and restored each and every time. This program is powerful and versatile – it can work on a flash drive, on a CD, on a portable hard drive, on a camera, and probably on a cellular phone! In addition to this it can be secured with a virus scanner that is built to be portable, and will run any program that has been modified to be used by PortableApps. You can find the full list of supported and downloadable applications at the following link: http://portableapps.com
Best thing about it – It is absolutely FREE. This is an open source project and is not a pay-to-use application. This beats out any other portable program tool I have used and I am quite happy with it, but don’t take my word for it. Go try it out for yourself!
Remember though, read the instructions and follow what it says to do – it has a very slick interface and is easily managed.
