How do I Install and Remove SODIMM?
SO-DIMM is the ellipsis for Small Outline Dual Inline Memory Module, and is a type of computer memory integrated circuit. Because of their small size relative to DIMMs, they are ideal for use in devices that have space concerns. They are used on notebook computers, high-end office printers and routers.
Installing Prerequisites
When handling SO-DIMMs during installation, it is important to remember that they are sensitive to electrostatic discharge damage, or ESD. ESD, which describes damage caused to electronic cards or components when mishandled, may result in complete or intermittent failure. As such, ensure that SO-DIMM does not come in contact with clothing and always use a wrist or ankle strap during the whole installation exercise. To install, you will need an ESD-preventing wrist wrap, antistatic bag or mat, Phillips screwdriver (No 2), small flat-blade screwdriver.
Installing SO-DIMM on a Cisco Router
To start, remove the network module from the router chassis. Next, remove the expansion module from the network module. Check whether the network module contains an expansion module with a Small Computer Systems Interface (SCSI) controller, and if that’s the case, disconnect the cable from the front of the network module. You can then remove the network module from the router chassis. Note that if your router is one of Cisco 3620 or Cisco 3640, the power to the router must be turned off before the network module is removed. As for Cisco 3660 and Cisco 3700, you can remove the network module from the router without turning off the power as they support “hot swapping” of network modules.
The next step would be placing the network module on an ESD protected surface. Avoid unnecessarily touching the bottom of the network module to avert damage to components at the bottom of the card. Use the small-flat blade to unscrew the two connector screws from the connector. Also, remove the expansion module screw using the Phillips screwdriver and two other screws located on the upper side of the expansion module. In a very delicate fashion, unplug the expansion module and pull it apart from the network module, but not before confirming that the connector has been removed from the opening in the faceplate.
Remove the SO-DIMM memory and reinstall it in the lower slot (if it was in the upper slot) in this manner. Spread the clips on the edge to release the SO-DIMM, and lift it slightly to separate it from the SO-DIMM connector. Hold the SO-DIMM in a manner allowing 30 degrees notch upwards from horizontal. Insert the SO-DIMM in the lower slot until it is in position. It should be in a horizontal position if properly installed. Install the new SO-DIMM memory in the upper section in the same manner as you installed the one in the lower section. Reinstall the expansion module in the front panel using the Phillips screwdriver, as well as the two standoff screws. Insert back the two connector screws onto the connector and tighten them. Complete by installing the network module into the router chassis and connect the module to the network.
